Golf
Wilmington is a great place to live and an even greater place to
play golf year round. Whether you are interested in living in a
golf course community or just wanting to play a round, we have
a dynamic selection of courses for you to choose from. Some of
the major reasons people flock to this coastal town to play golf
include it’s rich history, unique courses and designers and
not to mention the climate and location.
Golf in Wilmington dates back to 1896 with the establishment of
the private, Cape Fear Country Club. By 1897 the club offered a
7-hole layout that included the incorporation of Confederate earthworks
used during the Civil War just 35 years earlier. The club was able
to maintain a 9-hole course until 1910. Today’s course was
laid out in 1924. Many local enthusiast’s, compare Cape Fear
Country Club to Augusta National because of the immaculate condition
and the thousands of azaleas that line each fairway. During the
1950’ and 60’s it played host to the Azalea Open Invitational,
a PGA Tour event that included the 1957 champion, Arnold Palmer.
With more than twenty area courses of it’s own and the proximity
to other famous golf communities along with its rich history and
moderate climate should make Wilmington the perfect hub for any
golfer.
Boating
and Fishing
Weather permitting, recreational fishing is considered a year round
activity here, but peaks during the spring and fall months. Ocean
temperatures ranging from the 70s in the Gulf Stream to the 50s
near shore in the colder months set up conditions for king mackerel,
sea bass, and tuna to be caught in the ocean. During the spring,
summer and fall months, sheepshead, spot, tarpon, red drum, Spanish
mackerel, bluefish, whiting, trout, flounder, amberjack, striped
bass, croaker, white marlin, blue marlin, sailfish, shark, wahoo,
and dolphin can be reeled in as well.
To help promote the recreational fishing industry, artificial reefs
that provide habitat for sea life have been created. The Division
of Marine Fisheries has allowed for the use of old ships, railroad
cars, bridge rubble, and concrete as construction materials for
the artificial habitats. GPS coordinates are available to all fisherman
and can be found on charts that will help lead them to their favorite
fishing hole.
Parks
Wilmington and the other communities in New Hanover County, the
smallest county in the state, provide more than 75 public parks
to it’s residents and guests. Whether you are looking for
your neighborhood park, beautiful gardens, bike or hiking trails,
playgrounds, athletic
facilities, fishing, camping, horseback riding, disc golf or simply
